Some Sony cameras require a software update to enable exposure and focus controls. This document will guide you through the update process to unlock all shutter features.

You will need about 20 minutes, your camera charged to at least 60% and access to Wi-Fi. We recommend that you follow this guide on a computer. To open this page, simply enter this address into your web browser:

Option A. Easier, but requires a computer

Access Sony's PlayMemories website.

Click the "Install" button on the left.

Follow the instructions provided by Sony.

Option B. Update mostly in camera

If for some reason you can't complete "OptionA", you can always update "Smart Remote" using your camera's Wi-Fi. The process takes a bit longer but sometimes it's the only option.

Step 1. Create an account with Sony

We recommend that you do this step on a computer, tablet or smartphone. You can do it in camera, but having a real keyboard helps a lot.

To get started, create an account with

Sony Entertainment Network

. Here are a few tips:

Be sure to select a region that matches your current location. Otherwise, you may not be able to log in.

Choose a simple password. You will have to enter it behind closed doors. You can replace it with something more secure after the upgrade.

Sony will send you an email. Be sure to follow the confirmation link from this email.

Skip 2-factor authentication and phone number verification.

Step 2. Update smart remote

Once your account is created and activated, you can proceed with the update process. Make sure your camera is fully charged (at least 60%) and 2-factor authentication is disabled on your Sony account.

Make sure your camera's time and region are correct. Otherwise, you will not be able to log in to Sony's website. To set the time in camera: "Menu" → toolbox icon (the last one) → Zone and time → set accordingly

Back to main menu → 4th tab with small squares → "List of applications" p>

Select “PlayMemories Camera Apps”

Connect to your home Wi-Fi network

Click on “Network Settings”

“Set Access Point”.

Select your Wi-Fi name

Enter the password and click “OK”

Once connected to the Wi-Fi network, you should see the “PlayMemories Apps Camera” with the “Smart Remote Control” and “Update” buttons. Click on “Update”.

Click “Update” again

A question should appear: “You must have a Sony account. Do you have one?". Choose "Yes".

Enter the username and password you created earlier.

Click on “Accept and continue”.

Start the update process. This should take about 5 minutes.
