The

audio jack

on a laptop or desktop system is one of the easiest ports to use. The drivers for this port are automatically installed along with the audio drivers. If you are getting audio from your speakers, the audio jack drivers have also been installed. Just plug in a device.

The audio jack on a laptop is usually used to plug in headphones or an external microphone, but you can also use it to plug in a pair of external speakers or to split audio between two different devices. Any audio device that can connect via a 3.5mm jack can be connected to your system.

Audio jack not working (Windows 10)

The audio jack on a Windows 10 laptop can connect input and output devices. They will be detected immediately and you won't need to install any additional drivers for it, no matter how obscure the device is. If the audio jack is not working on your Windows 10 laptop, perform the following basic checks and then try the fixes listed below.

How to Fix a Headphone Jack Not Working (FULL GUIDE)

Basic checks

These checks will determine if you have a hardware or software problem. They will also determine if the problem is with your laptop or the device you are trying to use.

Restart the system.

Check audio

device in several different applications

to see if it works in any of them.

Connect the audio device (microphone, speakers, headphones) to a

another device

for example, another laptop and check if it works. The purpose of this check is to verify whether the device is working or not.

Connect a

different device to audio jack

for example, a different mic or headphones, and check if it works. If not, the problem is probably with the audio jack. This may or may not be a hardware issue.

In order to determine if the problem is hardware related or not, exhaust each of the following software fixes. If they don't work, you need to bring the laptop in for a check.

1. Enable audio input

This is a setting that you must enable on some systems in order to use the audio jack, but it may not work on all systems.

Open p>

Control Panel.

Go to

Hardware and sound.

Select

His.

< p>Go to tab

Registration.

Look for a

device called 'Line'.

Double click on it

to open its properties.

Go to the tab

Levels.

Activate it

'Listen to this device option'.

If you do not see the 'Line' option and Stereo is listed as a device, this fix will not apply to your system. Move on to other fixes.

2. Run the troubleshooter

Windows 10 has an audio input and output troubleshooter. The device may be connected to the audio jack to start working.

Open the app

Settings

(Keyboard shortcut Win+I).

Go to

Update & security>Troubleshoot.

Click on

Additional convenience stores.

Run them

Audio playback and audio recording troubleshooters

one by one and apply the fixes they recommend.

Restart the system.

3. Disable sound enhancements

Sound enhancements improve the sound on the system through software, but they can also cause problems with it. If your Windows 10 laptop's audio jack isn't working, try disabling sound enhancements.

Open

Control Panel.

Go to

< p>Hardware and sound.

Select

His.

Go to tab

Reading.

Double-click on your playback device.

Go to tab

Improvements.

Disable all enhancements.

If you have installed virtual audio drivers, disable or uninstall them.

Open

Control Panel.

Go to

Programs>Uninstall a program.

Look for the

virtual audio drivers

and click on

Uninstall button.

Restart the system.

5. Check the audio device in the app

Applications that can record audio will often have

an option to select one of the audio devices connected to the system.

An example of such an application is Audacity which is often used for recording.

In Audacity you can open the dropdown

next to the microphone icon and/or speaker icon and select another device.

6. Change active audio device

Windows 10 allows users to switch between different connected audio devices. On some systems, depending on the driver you have, the audio jack and built-in mic and speakers will be treated as a composite device while on others they will be treated as separate devices.

Click on the button

sound icon in the system tray.

Expand the menu by clicking

on the arrow button.

Select device

connected to the audio jack.

7. Update audio driver

Try updating the audio driver. This may solve problems with the audio jack.

Open

Device Manager.

Expand

Audio, video and game controllers.

Right click on your sound card

and select

Update Player

r from the context menu.

Select the option of

check online for updates

and install all available updates.

Restart the system.

Headphones not working on laptop? Conclusion

The above fixes will resolve software related issues that the audio jack may be facing. If they don't work, you probably have a hardware problem.

It is not uncommon for the audio jack to loosen. It's a port like other ports and with a laptop there's a higher chance of it getting disconnected.

The solution may be simple and cheap, but make sure you have it under a professional eye instead of opening it yourself.
